The Ordinary Foundation | Vegan & Cruelty Free

I think foundation would have to be the most important makeup product to me and it's one thing I am always on the look out for finding a better version of. It's also the one product I don't mind spending a bit more money on.

Over the past year or so I have really loved using Kat Von D's Lock It foundation but it can at times be quite drying so despite loving it and using it religiously, I still feel like the real holy grail vegan and cruelty free foundation is yet to be discovered. I also often use Too Faced's Born This Way foundation when I am looking for a more dewy and less dry finish. But again this one has it's downfalls in that I seem to get through it super quickly and sometimes it doesn't seem to have as much staying power as Kat Von D's.

After hearing many good things about The Ordinary's foundation I decided that the time had come to try it out for myself. And I have to say when I saw the price I was really pleasantly surprised! At only £5.90 each they really do seem like a very affordable option, especially when taking into account how much I usually pay for Kat Von D or Too Faced. The price alone though did make me question if these foundations would feel as good quality as my usual faves.

Because the price is so low I decided to pick up two of The Ordinary's foundations, both the Coverage and the Serum. I personally prefer a more medium to full coverage when it comes to foundation so I didn't have any high hopes that the Serum option would work well for me but I still wanted to give it a try and compare it to their Coverage one.

I started using the Coverage foundation first and my initial impressions were pretty good. It does seem to give me a pretty good coverage without perhaps feeling as heavy as Kat Von D's Lock It. I also really like the consistency of the liquid which is a little more fluid than what I am used to but it applied really nicely and finished less drying than Lock It.

To be completely honest the only downfall of this product for me is that it seems to stick in and highlight my fine lines, particularly around my eyes. And although it applies and covers well I am not completely sold on its staying power as I've found that come the end of the day it has disappeared from certain areas of my face.

All of that being said I am finding myself picking this up on an average day and I feel like it has become my preferred every day foundation and I am saving my more expensive options for more special occasions. I didn't really want to get into the habit of buying two to three different foundations but I quite like the idea of having a more affordable every day foundation. I also like how I feel a bit more special and made up on the occasion days with my other foundations.

With regards to the Serum foundation it actually took me a while to get around to trying this as I was enjoying using the coverage one. And just as I had expected this one wasn't quite right me and didn't offer enough coverage for me to feel confident in my skin. The formula is extremely lightweight and quite a watery consistency which I didn't really like. But that doesn't meant it wouldn't be right for someone else!

I think the price is definitely a great selling point to these foundations, along with the fact that they are cruelty free and vegan friendly. I think they probably work better for different people depending on skin types etc but at this price they are definitely worth trying out and deciding for yourself.

Have you tried The Ordinary foundations yet?
What did you think?

  1. I just bought the coverage foundation, though now I wish I had read this first. One of my main concerns is my fine lines, etc. Fingers crossed it'll turn out ok though! Thanks for sharing this review xx

  3. Haven't tried these yet but the Serum one seems like something I'd enjoy, and the colour looks great as well!
